12. PRAY AS YOU GO I want to recommend the website of the Jesuit Media Initiatives. It is an excellent website to aid personal prayer. It gives guidance on preparing to pray, an eight minute review of the day and prayers for each day. The format usually involves a short meditation with spoken word, silence and music. The website also has information on retreats and Ignatian spirituality. Why not visit www.pray-as-you-go.org

If you are looking for a book to read you might want to consider one of the following:
Silence and Honey Cakes (The Wisdom of the Desert) by Rowan Williams (£7.99) Williams returns to the desert fathers and mothers of the fourth and fifth centuries, revealing a spirituality that resonates strongly with aspects of the modern spirituality search.
A History of God by Karen Armstrong (£9.99) The idea of a single being – God, Yahweh, Allah – has existed for over 4000 years. But the history of God is also the history of human struggle. While Judaism, Islam and Christianity proclaim the goodness of God, organised religion has too often been the catalyst for violence and ineradicable prejudice.
Deep Calls to Deep by David Foster (£9.89) This book explores the various ways of praying and how these lead into a deeper, quieter form of contemplative prayer.
Praying with the Earth (A Prayerbook for Peace) (£7.69) by John Philip Newell This book articulates the longings for peace that are closer to the heart of the world’s spiritual traditions than our divisions.
For Lovers of God Everywhere (Poems of the Christian Mystics) by Roger Housden (£8.09) In this book, Housden introduces us to some of the foremost poets of both the Eastern and Western Christian traditions. He takes us from the wisdom of the Desert Fathers to the passion of St Augustine, through the medieval ecstasies of St Francis of Assisi and St Catherine of Siena to the subtleties of St John of the Cross and St Teresa of Avila; and on to the contemporary voices like Rainer Maria Rilke, T S Eliot and Mary Oliver.

WELCOME TO MAYFIELD SALISBURY PARISH CHURCH
This congregation is part of the Church of Scotland: Reformed in doctrine, Presbyterian in government and a member of the worldwide family of the Christian Church. Whether you are in regular attendance at worship or this is your first visit, welcome to this community and service of worship. God bless you today.
THE INTERPRETATION OF HOLY SCRIPTURE
Being Christian involves being shaped by the language of the Christian tradition, including the Bible as the foundation of the tradition. Some in this community understand the Christian language quite literally and factually. Others understand it symbolically and metaphorically. What we share is a common passion for the more-than-literal meaning of the stories and teachings that shape us. (Marcus Borg)
PREPARING FOR WORSHIP
Jesus is present with us now. We need to be present to Him. We may arrive at church in a distracted state. However early or late you arrive, take time to prepare. A good starting point is to take heed of the wording at the West Door: ‘Take your sandals off your feet for the place where you stand is holy ground’; ‘Be still and know that I am God’; ‘Jesus said, 'I am the bread if life: he who comes to me shall never hunger.’’ You may have your own prayers which you use to prepare yourself. If not, you can pray verses from the Psalms, such as Psalm 139: 1 – 18; Ps 23, 42, 43, 90, 121, 130 or 144 – 150. You can also meditatively read the hymns for today as a means of preparation. The purpose of all that is done in worship and the preparation of worship is to draw you closer to God.
“Dry not, dry not, your tears of love eternal! Only to eyes that fail to weep does this world seem so dull and dead. Dry not, dry not, those long, sad tears of love
Johann von Goethe”
