Addressing the Gap Between Professor, Pulpit and Pew. New College, Saturday 11th February 10.00am to 1.00pm.
This event will bring together students, ministers, Christian NGO workers and members of congregations to discuss the place of theological reflection in the life and work of the church, and will address questions such as:
- Is the Gospel being ‘dumbed-down’?
- Is the Church at risk becoming an intellectual ghetto?
- Are theologians out of touch?
- Is a theology degree necessary to understand the bible?
There will be presentations from Dr Paul Nimmo, award-winning lecturer in Theology at New College, Revd Vanessa Parr Associate Rector at St Paul’s and St George’s Church, and Revd Kathy Galloway, former leader of the Iona Community and current head of Christian Aid Scotland.
The event will be followed by refreshments and a light lunch. The event is free but ticketed. Tickets and further information are available at http://churchandtheology.eventbrite.co.uk or from liam.jerrold.fraser@gmail.com
The Church of Scotland HIV Programme is committed to supporting our partner churches overseas as they respond to the HIV pandemic in their own countries. It also supports a number of projects within Scotland. On Sunday 26th February Mayfield Salisbury will be participating in Souper Sunday, raising awareness and funds in support of the Programme. The 10.45 service, led by members of the congregation, will focus on the global and local issues surrounding HIV and stigma. Souper Sunday aims to address stigma, whether at home or abroad. Afterwards a simple bread and homemade soup lunch will be available in the Halls for a donation of £3.00 (or more if you wish!) per head. We hope you’ll be able to join us! - Kate O’Brien
