Introit - These are they which follow the lamb
Words: Revelations 14: 4, 5
Music: John Goss (1800 to 1880)
These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.
These were redeemed from among men, being the first-fruits
unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile,
for they are without fault before the throne of God.
Call to Worship
From Psalm 23
One: Come, lie down in green pastures.
All: We trust the Shepherd.
One: Come, walk beside the still waters
All: We follow the Shepherd.
One: Come, do not fear even the darkness.
All: We are protected by the Shepherd.
One: Come, let goodness and mercy be with you.
All: We live in the Shepherd’s care.
Hymn 739 The Church’s One Foundation
(t. Aurelia)
The Church's one foundation
is Jesus Christ her Lord:
she is his new creation
by water and the word;
from heaven he came and sought her
to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her,
and for her life he died.
Called forth from every nation,
yet one o'er all the earth,
her charter of salvation:
one Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses,
and shares one holy food,
as to one hope she presses,
with every grace endued.
In toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace for evermore,
till with the vision glorious
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great Church victorious
shall be the Church at rest.
Yet she on earth has union
with God the Three in One,
and mystical communion
with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with thee.
Samuel John Stone (1839-1900)
Prayer of Approach, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn MP 1008 - The Lord’s my shepherd
(t. The Lord's my shepherd - Townend)
The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want;
He makes me lie in pastures green.
He leads me by the still, still waters,
His goodness restores my soul.
And I will trust in You alone,
And I will trust in You alone,
For Your endless mercy follows me,
Your goodness will lead me home.
He guides my ways in righteousness,
And He anoints my head with oil,
And my cup, it overflows with joy,
I feast on His pure delights.
And though I walk the darkest path,
I will not fear the evil one,
For You are with me, and Your rod and staff
Are the comfort I need to know.
Stuart Townend
Reading - Psalm 23
Read by Hilary Watkinson
The Divine Shepherd. A Psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
my whole life long.
Anthem - The Lord is my shepherd
Words: from Psalm23
Music: Howard Goodall (b. 1958)
The Lord is my Shepherd, I'll not want; He maketh me down to lie in green
pastures. He leadeth me besides the still waters. Yea though I walk through
the valley in the shadow of death I will fear no evil. You are with me you
will comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of
my life and I will dwell in the house of thy Lord forever.
Reading - Luke 15:1 - 10
Read by Hilary Watkinson
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2
And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow
welcomes sinners and eats with them.’
3 So he told them this parable: 4 ‘Which one of you, having a hundred
sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the
wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has
found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes
home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them,
“Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.” 7 Just so, I tell
you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than
over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
The Parable of the Lost Coin
8 ‘Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does
not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9
When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours,
saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” 10 Just
so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one
sinner who repents.’
Hymn 551 - In heavenly love abiding
(t. Penlan)
In heavenly love abiding,
no change my heart shall fear;
and safe is such confiding,
for nothing changes here:
the storm may roar without me,
my heart may low be laid;
but God is round about me,
and can I be dismayed?
Wherever he may guide me,
no want shall turn me back;
my Shepherd is beside me,
and nothing can I lack.
His wisdom ever waketh,
his sight is never dim:
he knows the way he taketh,
and I will walk with him.
Green pastures are before me,
which yet I have not seen;
bright skies will soon be o'er me,
where darkening clouds have been.
My hope I cannot measure:
my path to life is free:
my Saviour has my treasure,
and he will walk with me.
Anna Laetitia Waring (1823-1910)
Sermon – Lost and Found
Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth
Hymn 555 - Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
(t. Amazing Grace)
Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.
John Newton (1725-1807)
Prayer for Others
Hymn 738 - Glorious things of thee are spoken
(t. Austrian Hymn)
Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God;
he whose word cannot be broken
formed thee for his own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded,
what can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
thou mayest smile at all thy foes.
See! the streams of living waters,
springing from eternal love,
well supply thy sons and daughters,
and all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river
ever will their thirst assuage --
grace which, like the Lord the Giver,
never fails from age to age?
Saviour, since of Zion's city
I, through grace, a member am,
let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in thy Name.
Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
and all boasted pomp and show;
solid joys and lasting treasure
none but Zion's children know.
John Newton (1725-1807) (alt.)
Closing Responses
Adapted from a prayer by Mary Petrina Boyd
One: Loving Shepherd, you know each of our names,
All: You care for us.
One: When we face darkness and pain,
All: You walk beside us.
One: When we hunger for your love,
All: You feed us at your table.
One: When we are lonely,
All: You fill us with your presence.
One: Our cup overflows with your grace,
All: May your goodness and mercy follow us
all the days of our lives.
Benediction
Threefold Amen

THIS MORNING’S CHAMBER GROUP MUSIC
John Goss, best known as the composer of the hymn tune for “Praise my
soul the King of Heaven” was organist at St Paul’s Cathedral and also
Professor of Harmony at the Royal College of Music. The anthem shows
great craftsmanship in setting the text and in shaping the musical phrasing.
The anthem, a setting of verses from the 23rd Psalm, is by the highly
talented and popular composer, arranger and presenter Howard Goodall.
It is best known as the theme tune to “the Vicar of Dibley” The lilting
melody opening with the soprano solo is repeated in harmony. A more
troubled middle section intervenes before the setting reverts to the main
melody to close.
