Call to Worship
From Luke 19:1-10
Leader: With Zacchaeus and the pressing crowds,
All: We look to see Jesus.
Leader: With the lonely and the lost,
All: We look to see Jesus.
Leader: With those seeking meaning and forgiveness,
All: We look to see Jesus.
Leader: Walk with us to that viewpoint, Lord
All: As we worship you today
Hymn 103 Fill Your Hearts with Joy and Gladness
(t. Rhuddlan)
Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Reading Psalm 119:137 - 144
Read by Kay McIntosh DCS (OT p581)
137 You are righteous, O LORD, and your judgements are right. 138 You
have appointed your decrees in righteousness and in all faithfulness. 139
My zeal consumes me because my foes forget your words. 140 Your
promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. 141 I am small and
despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is an
everlasting righteousness, and your law is the truth. 143 Trouble and
anguish have come upon me, but your commandments are my delight. 144
Your decrees are righteous for ever; give me understanding that I may live.
Anthem: Let us now praise famous men
Words: Ecclesiasticus 44
Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 to 1958)
Let us now praise famous men and our fathers that begat us such as did
bear rule in their kingdoms men renowned for their power leaders of the
people by their counsel and by their knowledge such as found out musical
tunes and recited verses in writing All these were honoured in their
generation and for the glory of our times but some there be which have no
memorial who have perished as though they have never been. Their bodies
are buried in peace but their name liveth for evermore.
Reading St Luke 19:1 - 10 Read by Kay McIntosh DCS (NT p79)
Jesus and Zacchaeus 19 [Jesus] entered Jericho and was passing through it.
2 A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was
rich. 3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he
could not, because he was short in stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed
a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.
5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus,
hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.’ 6 So he hurried
down and was happy to welcome him. 7 All who saw it began to grumble
and said, ‘He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.’ 8 Zacchaeus
stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will
give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back
four times as much.’ 9 Then Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to
this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man
came to seek out and to save the lost.’
Hymn 533 Will You Come and Follow Me?
(t. Kelvingrove)

Hymn 740 For All the Saints
(t. Sine Nomine) Verses 1-2, 6-8
Closing Responses - From Luke 19:1-10
Leader: You can heal,
All: Christ has touched you.
Leader: You can love,
All: Christ has sought you.
Leader: You can give yourself away.
All: Christ has called you.
Leader: You can break the barriers from which others suffer.
All: Christ has visited your house.
Leader: Christ is in you and around you.
All: Christ will set you free.
Benediction and Threefold Amen

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC ‘O quam Gloriosum’ by the Spanish
Renaissance composer Victoria is a dramatic (albeit restrained) setting of a
text for All Saints. After a joyful, largely chordal, opening, the composer
underlays the simple upper setting of ‘gaudent’ (they rejoice) with waves of
running sound. He then employs inventive text painting on ‘sequuntur’
(they follow’) as the vocal entries imitate each other in succession. We are
currently celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one
if the foremost composers of the Twentieth century. His anthem is a
unison song written over a constant marching accompaniment which only
relents briefly for the words ‘Their bodies are buried in peace.’ This piece
also uses key changes, sometimes quite extreme, to carry the text.

11. GOLDEN THREADS REAWAKENED From a box of golden threads that
lay unopened for 70 years came an inspiring story that has been translated
into a tapestry with a powerful message which resonates with what is
happening in our world today. Themes of refugee travel and survival,
avoiding conflict, reaching out, building bridges and seeking to make the
world a better place are imagined in this creative piece woven and collated
by seventeen local women. The Golden Threads Reawakened can be seen
in the vestibule during October.
12. YOUTH GROUP Please note that Youth Group will not take place this
evening, 30 October. Youth activities will resume next week with the Youth
Group on Sunday 6 November.
13. ‘LIVING THE QUESTIONS’ – NEW COURSE TO EXPLORE CHRISTIAN
FAITH A new course is about to start to explore Christian faith, led by the
three ministers at Mayfield Salisbury, Priestfield and Craigmillar Park and
hosted by each of the churches. It is based on the ‘Living the Questions’
material, which is produced by some well-known progressive theologians
from both sides of the Atlantic, such as Brian MacLaren and John Bell. The
material encourages growing in faith by discussion of big questions
relating to faith and the world, rather than the teaching of doctrine. The
course will run for six Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm to 8.30pm,
starting on 9 November and ending on 14 December. You would be very
welcome! To register or to find out more, speak to one of the three
ministers or email them. For Mayfield Salisbury –
14. MUSICAL CONCERT FOR ADVENT ON 11 DECEMBER Our choir and
Chamber Group will present an evening of Advent and Christmas music on
11 December. We would be delighted if we were joined by other singers
from Mayfield Salisbury and indeed from Priestfield and Craigmillar Park, to
make an extra special joint musical event. While you would not need to be
brilliant sight readers, and there will be a chance to learn the music, a
degree of musical literacy would be required. Rehearsals would be
principally on Thursday evenings starting on 17 November. If however
there were a number of people who would want to take part but who
cannot attend on Thursdays Walter would arrange some additional
rehearsal at other times. If you would like to take part or to ask any
questions about it, please let Walter know as soon as possible so that he
can firm up on rehearsal dates. Walter Thomson, Choirmaster.
15. PAPERBACK BOOKS The Ecogroup is collecting paperbacks in good
condition for a Paperback Book Exchange planned for Sunday 20
November. Please leave contributions in the boxes in the Entrance Hall
(underneath the coat pegs).
16. MEDICINE BLISTER PACKS RECYCLING The Eco group have long been
pursuing the issue of recycling the blister packs which contain medication -
anything from prescribed medication to Paracetamol. Some previous
information retaking blister packs to Superdrug turned out to be inaccurate
(it's only Superdrug Pharmacies which do this.) We now have a link which
can send blister packs to Haddington for forwarding to a firm which
recycles. Blister packs can be collected in a box (labelled) in the Entrance Hall.
17. CHRISTIAN AID APPEAL We are grateful to everyone who supported
our Christian Aid lunch on 16 October, and to all who gave so generously.
So far, we have raised a magnificent £2,596, and every penny will help
make a difference to the lives of our neighbours in some of the world’s
poorest communities – so they can thrive, not just survive. If you have
brought a donation for Christian Aid this morning, please put your
envelope in the offering plate in the main entrance, or hand it to a member
of the Christian Aid team. Thank you!
18. GIVING – QR CODE Our Quick Response code is a handy way of using
your smart ‘phone or tablet’s QR app to link you to our Giving Page.
Once you have joined the Giving Page safeguards are still operative.
