Hymn 198 Let Us Build a House Where Love Can Dwell
(t.Two Oaks)
Reflection by Peter Brand
Session Clerk of Mayfield at the Union in 1993
Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn Praise with Joy the World’s Creator
(t. Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven)
Reflection by Eileen Watson

Reading Psalm 96:1 - 9 Read by Neil Newton
(OT p562) Salisbury and Mayfield Salisbury
1 O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to
the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare
his glory among the nations, his marvellous works among all the peoples. 4
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above
all gods .5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the
heavens 6 Honour and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in
his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory
and strength. 8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an
offering, and come into his courts. 9 Worship the LORD in holy splendour;
tremble before him, all the earth.
Anthem Teach me, O Lord, the ways of the statutes.
Words: Psalm 119. v23
Music: Thomas Attwood (1765 – 1838)
Teach me, O lord, the way of thy statutes;
and I shall keep it unto the end.
Reading John 17:1 - 11, 20 - 26 Read by Catriona Graham
(NT p108) Salisbury and Mayfield Salisbury
Jesus Prays for His Disciples 17 After Jesus had spoken these words, he
looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son
so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over
all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is
eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ
whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that
you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with
the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.
6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the
world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your
word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8
for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have
received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have
believed that you sent me. 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on
behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because
they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been
glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in
the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name
that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one…
20 ‘I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will
believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you,
Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world
may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I
have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and
you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may
know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved
me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be
with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because
you loved me before the foundation of the world.
25 ‘Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and
these know that you have sent me. 26 I made your name known to them,
and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me
may be in them, and I in them.’

Organ Postlude
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
arr. Christopher Tambling (1964-2015)
THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
Robert Whyte was a catholic composer of
the Elizabethan period. Copeland’s hymn is a translation of the original
Latin text. The two verses are set to a chorale type tune with more highly
decorated under parts particularly in the alto and tenor. We have adapted
the text of what was originally an evening hymn for morning worship.
Thomas Attwood, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral and composer of the
Chapel Royal from 1797 when he composed this anthem. He was a pupil of
Mozart and a friend of Mendelssohn. The text is much repeated but with
different treatment throughout the piece.
