Call to Worship
Leader: God calls us away from the chaos and
confusion of the world, into the peace of God’s presence.
All: With God we see our lives more clearly,
the broken pieces are put back together.
Leader: God calls us out of loneliness into a life of community.
All: Together in worship, we find out what it means to be truly human.
Leader: God sends us back into the world’s confusion
and busyness, brokenness and isolation.
All: We take with us serenity and joy from God
as bearer’s of peace and love. Amen.
Hymn 139 Praise the Lord
(t. Laus Deo - Redhead No 46)
Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn 125 Lord of all being, throned afar
(t. Ombersley)
Reading - Genesis 9: 8 - 17
Read by Valerie Holehouse (OT p7)
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 ‘As for me, I am
establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and
with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals,
and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark.[a]
11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut
off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to
destroy the earth.’
12 God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and
you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13
I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant
between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the
bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between
me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never
again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the
clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God
and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ 17 God said to
Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me
and all flesh that is on the earth.’
Anthem Turn thy face from our sins
Words: Psalm 51 Vs 9 – 11
Music: Thomas Attwood (1765 – 1838)
Turn Thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds.
Make me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence,
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Reading Mark 1: 9 - 15
Read by Valerie Holehouse (NT p33)
The Baptism of Jesus 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up
out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending
like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the
Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’
The Temptation of Jesus 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into
the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by
Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry 14 Now after John was arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying,
‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and
believe in the good news.

Organ Postlude
THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC Palestrina was the leading composer of
the Roman School of musical composition of the Italian Renaissance. The
melodic basis for the Mass was the tune of the hymn for Matins and
Apostles which gives it its name. The Kyrie is the serene opening short
movement of the Mass, in all three sections showing a beautifully crafted
balance between the four vocal parts. Thomas Attwood, organist of St
Paul’s Cathedral, was a pupil of Mozart and a friend of Mendelssohn. Each
part of the melody is first stated by a soprano solo before being repeated
in harmony by the choir. Note the insistent setting of the word “renew”.
NEWS AND INTIMATIONS
0. FIRST FRIDAY FRIENDS is a place for people living with memory loss and their carers to come to
chat, sing, and have a cup of tea. We meet on the first Friday of every month.
Why not try us out this week on Friday 3 March at 2.30 pm in the Bill
McDonald Hall. If you would like more information, speak to Anne Mulligan
(07790 892594) or Sandra Carter (07531 696240)
1. LENT 2023 – an ecological mission No-one can be unaware of the
ecological challenges we face. As Christians, the fifth mark of mission
encourages us to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain
and renew the life of the earth. On each of the six Sundays of Lent, the
services will be preceded by a brief commentary by a member of Mayfield
Salisbury’s Eco Group on one aspect of these ecological challenges,
focussing on what we can do to help. The 6 themes will be heating,
clothing, food, biodiversity, transport and climate justice.
2. OPEN TO ALL Coffee and tea are served in the McDonald Hall at the
close of the Sunday morning services. Everyone is very welcome.
3. THURSDAY CLUB takes place every Thursday at 2.00pm in the Bill
McDonald Hall. This week, the Minister, Sandy Forsyth will give a talk title –
The Holy Land, followed by tea and fellowship. All are very welcome!
4. AFTERNOON SERVICE The first Short Afternoon Service of 2023 will
be held on Tuesday, 7 MARCH at 2.30pm followed by refreshments and
chat - until around 3.45pm. Everyone always made most welcome - please
join us! Our bi-monthly mid-week services are especially appreciated by
the less mobile in our parish community and those for whom Sunday
Services are rather more challenging to attend. We all remain seated at
our tables throughout the afternoon and there is time for conversation and
exchange of news.
For further information please contact our Pastoral Assistant, Kay McIntosh,
your own Pastoral Visitor (PV) or Anne Sturrock. Names would be
appreciated in advance (nearer the time) so that we can set up tables
allowing plenty of space, and to allow us to cater for all. Please contact
Kay on 0758 704 3191 if you are coming. We will also take leave - as this
will be Kay and Hillary’s last mid-week Service. [The following Afternoon
Service will be held on Tuesday 16 May]
5. PASTORAL CARE If you would like to have a regular home visit or
telephone call from one of our pastoral care team, please contact me and I
will arrange that for you. If you would like to be held in prayer, or would
like us to pray for someone you know, please make your request to Kay. If
you would like to participate in our confidential prayer chain praying for
these requests, please get in touch; prayer chain emails are sent out once a
week. You can email Kay on 07587 043 191 or
6. MARMALADE SALE Christian Aid’s marmalade sale will be held in the
Newington Room after the joint service on 19th March. Every jar you buy
will help Christian Aid pursue its aim: to create a world where everyone can
live a full life, free from poverty. If you have marmalade to contribute, we’d
be very grateful! You can hand it in to the Newington Room between 2 and
4pm, on Saturday 18th March, but if you’re unable to do so, please contact
Kate O’Brien on 667 4362 or
arrangement. Please label your jars on the lid. THANK YOU!

7. CHRISTIAN AID EMERGENCY APPEAL On Monday 6 February, a
magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern Turkey close to the border with
northern Syria. A second 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck 9 hours later,
with aftershocks following. Many thousands of men, women and children
have died or are injured in the aftermath.
Even before this devastating earthquake, there were over four million
people in need of aid in Northwest Syria. Nearly 3 million people have
been displaced by the long conflict in Syria, 80% of whom are women and
children. Now extreme weather events and the spiraling costs of food and
fuel prices due to ongoing conflicts are making the situation even worse.
People are facing crisis on crisis.
Christian Aid is already working with partners in Northwest Syria to provide
winter kits to people seeking shelter. It is not too late to save lives and give
people hope. Please donate what you can to support this urgent
humanitarian work. There will be a bucket collection after both services
this morning, or you can donate online at this website
www.christianaid.org.uk/appeals/emergencies/dec-turkey-syria-earthquake-appeal
Every prayer, every gift, every action brings hope to
people hit by disaster. Thank you. Christian Aid is a member of the DEC, a
group of fifteen charities who each specialise in different areas of disaster
response. The UK Government is currently offering match funding for
donations to these charities. While match funds last, your donations will be
doubled. The Christian Aid Team
8. FAIRTRADE STALL on Sunday 5 March. Despite Traidcraft going into
administration and no longer trading some items are still available. So
please bring cash with you to buy coffee, tea, biscuits, and chocolate etc,
with thanks, Jean & Alastair.
9. COLLECTIONS I am very grateful to those who so far have donated
online to me or to William in cash to mark Hillary’s departure and Kay’s
retirement. In either case, if you indicate H&K - or there is no specific
reference - I will divide the amount equally between the two. With Hillary’s
last service on 19 March and Kay’s on the 26th it would be very helpful if
any contributions could be with William or myself by Monday 13 March.
Please contact the church office for more information: 0131 667 1522
10. YOUTH AND CHILDREN VOLUNTEERS needed for Sunday 19 March!
This will be a joint service at 1030am led by young people from the
congregation. Hillary is looking for young musicians (of all levels and
abilities) to join with our music group that morning, as well as children or
young people wanting to help out with readings and prayers in the service.
If this sounds like something you'd like to be involved with, please contact
Hillary by the end of the day on Thursday 2 March.
11. GIVING – QR CODE Our Quick Response code is a handy way of
using your smart ‘phone or tablet’s QR app to link you to our Giving Page.
Once you have joined the Giving Page safeguards are still operative.
PLATES: Those who would have wished to use it may make use of the
offering plates situated in the vestibule and halls entrance, at the close of
the service. Regular and one-off donations are possible online at
www.give.net/20311853 (scan the QR code) or please contact our Freewill

12. ONLINE LENT STUDIES With the work that is going into union
discussions at present, there is no joint Lent Bible study planned this year
with our two local partners. However, if you are looking to engage with an
interesting series of studies over Lent, you might consider the online
resource ‘Teach Us to Pray: A Close Look at the Lord’s Prayer’, which is
being offered by Revd Dr Michael Hull, Director of Studies at the Scottish
Episcopal Institute, Edinburgh. The series will run on the Mondays of Lent
at 7.00pm in six 30-minute webinars, each of which will be posted on
YouTube and remain viewable anytime thereafter. The series starts on
Monday 27 February with ‘Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name’.

13. YOUTH WORSHIP SUNDAY 26 FEB AT 7.00PM: We will be meeting in
the Bill McDonald Hall for a night of praise, prayer and reflection as we
celebrate the first Sunday in Lent. All ages invited!
14. PANCAKE BREAKFAST - thank you! Thanks to all the youth and
parents who helped run the breakfast last Sunday, and to those who
attended. We are grateful for your generous donations for the youth fund
which came in at £258.
15. UPCOMING CONGREGATIONAL PILGRIMAGE WALKS – DATES FOR
DIARY You will recall the two congregational pilgrimages in Autumn 2021
and Easter 2022, when we had very enjoyable days walking the first and
last legs of the Fife Pilgrim Way. This year, we will be walking on the Forth
to Farne Way, ending with a Saturday pilgrimage to the island of
Lindisfarne. We will be doing so in conjunction with the congregations of
the Parish of Traprain in East Lothian. Dates to follow for your diary – all
welcome to be part of each walk:
• Friday 24 March 2023 – East Linton to North Berwick (approx. 7miles)
• Monday 8 May 2023 – Circular walk from Coldingham Priory, via St Abbs’ Lighthouse (approx. 7miles)
• Saturday 10 June 2023 – Beal Farm Cafe to Lindisfarne (approx. 5miles)
