One Crown That No One Seeks
One crown that no one seeks
And yet the highest head
Its isolation coveted
Its stigma deified
While Pontius Pilate lives
In whatsoever hell
That coronation pierces him
He recollects it well.

Introit - O God, the King of Glory
Words: Collect from the Book of Common Prayer
Music: Henry Purcell (1659 to 1695)
O God, the King of glory, who hast exalted thy only son
Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven;
we beseech thee, leave us not comfortless, but send to us
thine Holy Ghost, to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same
place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before us. Amen
Call to Worship – From Psalm 93
Leader: The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty;
All: the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength.
Leader: He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
All: your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
Leader: The floods have lifted up,
O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice;
All: the floods lift up their roaring.
Leader: More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
All: more majestic than the waves of the sea,
majestic on high is the LORD!
Leader: Your decrees are very sure;
All: holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.
Hymn 471 To the name of our salvation
(t. Westminster Abbey) 15th century
Gloriosi Salvatoris
To the name of our salvation
laud and honour let us pay,
which for many a generation
hid in God's foreknowledge lay,
but with holy exultation
we may sing aloud today.
Jesus is the name we treasure,
name beyond what words can tell,
name of gladness, name of pleasure,
ear and heart delighting well;
name of power beyond all measure,
saving us from sin and hell.
Jesus is the name exalted
over every other name;
in this name, whene'er assaulted
we can put our foes to shame:
strength to those who would have halted,
eyes to blind, and feet to lame.
Therefore we in love adoring
this most blessed name revere,
Holy Jesus, thee imploring
so to write it in us here,
that hereafter, heavenward soaring,
we may sing with angels there.
Prayer of Approach and Confession & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn 78 Oh, set ye open unto me
(t. Southwark) PSALM 118: 19 - 25, 28, 29
O set ye open unto me
the gates of righteousness;
then will I enter into them,
and I the Lord will bless.
This is the gate of God, by it
the just shall enter in.
Thee will I praise, who answered me
and hast my safety been.
That stone is made head corner-stone,
which builders did despise:
this is the doing of the Lord,
and wondrous in our eyes.
This is the day God made, in it
we'll joy triumphantly.
Save now, I pray thee, Lord; I pray,
send now prosperity.
Thou art my God, I'll thee exalt;
my God, I will thee praise.
Give thanks to God, for he is good:
his mercy lasts always.
Reading 2 Samuel 23:1 - 5
Read by Jean MacGilchrist
The Last Words of David
23 Now these are the last words of David:
The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
the oracle of the man whom God exalted,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
the favourite of the Strong One of Israel:
2 The spirit of the Lord speaks through me,
his word is upon my tongue.
3 The God of Israel has spoken,
the Rock of Israel has said to me:
One who rules over people justly,
ruling in the fear of God,
4 is like the light of morning,
like the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.
5 Is not my house like this with God?
For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
Will he not cause to prosper
all my help and my desire?
Anthem Rejoice the Lord is King
Words: Charles Wesley (1707 to 1788)
Music: Bryan Kelly (b. 1934)
Rejoice, the Lord is King: Your Lord and King adore!
Rejoice, give thanks and sing, And triumph evermore.
Lift up your heart,Lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I
say, rejoice! Jesus, the Saviour, reigns, the God of truth
and love; When He has purged our stains, He took his
seat above; Lift up your heart, Lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! His kingdom cannot fail,
He rules o'er earth and heav'n; The keys of death
and hell Are to our Jesus giv'n: Lift up your heart,
Lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
Reading St John 18:33 – 38a
Read by Jean MacGilchrist
33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned
Jesus, and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ 34
Jesus answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others
tell you about me?’ 35 Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I?
Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over
to me. What have you done?’ 36 Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom
is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world,
my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed
over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ 37
Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say
that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into
the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to
the truth listens to my voice.’ 38 Pilate asked him, ‘What is truth?’
Hymn 520 Ye who the name of Jesus bear
(t. St Peter) PARAPHRASE 52, verses 1, 3 - 6
Ye who the name of Jesus bear,
his sacred steps pursue;
and let that mind which was in him
be also found in you.
His greatness he for us abased,
for us his glory veiled;
in human likeness dwelt on earth,
his majesty concealed:
Nor only as a man appears,
but stoops a servant low;
submits to death, nay, bears the cross,
in all its shame and woe.
Hence God this generous love to all
with honours just hath crowned,
and raised the name of Jesus far
above all names renowned.
That at this name, with sacred awe,
each humble knee should bow,
of hosts immortal in the skies,
and nations spread below.
Sermon
Revd Helen Alexander
Hymn 269 Eternal ruler of the ceaseless round
(t. Song 1)
Eternal ruler of the ceaseless round
of circling planets singing on their way,
guide of the nations from the night profound
into the glory of the perfect day:
rule in our hearts, and keep us ever true,
directed, strengthened, and upheld by you.
We are your own, the children of your love,
your family, with your beloved Son;
come to us, Holy Spirit, like a dove,
and fill our hearts that we may be as one;
as one with you, our comforter and friend;
as one with him, our way, our life, our end.
We would be one in hatred of all wrong,
one in our love of all things kind and fair,
one with the joy that finds a voice in song,
one with the grief that trembles into prayer,
one in the power that sets us free from fear
to follow truth, and so to find you near.
Prayer of Thanksgiving and for Others
Hymn 459 Crown him with many crowns
(t. Diademata)
Crown him with many crowns,
the Lamb upon his throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem
Drowns - all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless King
through all eternity.
Crown him the Lord of life,
who triumphed o'er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife
for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing
who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.
Crown him the Lord of love;
behold his hands and side,
rich wounds yet visible above,
in beauty glorified.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
for thou hast died for me:
thy praise shall never, never fail
throughout eternity.
Closing Responses
Leader: God keeps those of a steadfast mind in peace.
All: In God we put our trust.
Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord
All: We shall serve the Lord with thankfulness and joy.
Benediction
Threefold Amen

This Morning’s Music by the Chamber Group The two
presentations form the Chamber Group for 'Christ the King'
were composed some three hundred years apart. The introit,
found in the library of York Minster, is in three sections. The
first employs both chordal and polyphonic devices with great
harmonic inventiveness. There follows a simpler central section
in triple time before the final robust section reverts to the
tempo of the opening. The punchy and rhythmic twentieth
century anthem by Bryan Kelly, one time teacher at the Royal
College of Music, is an exuberant setting of a well known hymn.
It grabs the attention with strong unison passages and some
incidents of clashing harmonies. Even the gentler middle section
maintains the latent tension.

GIFT SERVICES SUNDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2021
SIMPSON HOUSE is part of the CrossReach group of caring services.
Their need is for toys and gifts for children from babyhood to mid-teens.
I haven't mentioned footballs so far this year, but they are most welcome
together with accessories such as shin guards and goalie gloves.
Toiletries and art materials suitable for late primary age and early
secondary are welcome in this box together with graphic novels.
Simpson House runs a project called The Sunflower Garden and would
appreciate any child-friendly stationery and craft items. Play-doh,
glitter pens, felt-tips, plain paper, ordinary or coloured pencils, rubbers
and sharpeners and colouring books would be good.
WOMEN'S AID continues to run its safe-houses, but the head office is
open only to a limited number of staff. Therefore, they would once
more appreciate vouchers to enable their service users to choose
gifts themselves. Vouchers for Sainsbury's or Morrison's supermarkets
are particularly useful. They also have a Just-Giving page live online
for anyone who wishes to donate directly.
www.justgiving.com/campaign/EWA2021
Wrapping paper and gift tags are most welcome for our appeal. With
thanks, but second-hand items, second-hand clothing and alcohol
cannot be placed. Our appeal also welcomes cash if you are unsure of
what to buy. Anne Graham - 0131 667 6331
SERVICE TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES Sunday 5 December at
7.00pm. If in the run up to Christmas you are feeling the loss of a
much-loved family member or friend, and perhaps have not had
the opportunity to have a service of thanksgiving due to the pandemic,
do join us in the church on the evening of Sunday 5 December to
remember, reflect and give thanks for their lives. It will be a quiet,
contemplative service for peace and healing, to which all are welcome.
A BOOK FESTIVAL OF 'LITERATURE, RELIGION AND IMAGINATION' is
being held from 3 - 5 December at New College, to celebrate its 175th
anniversary, with a stellar line up including Robert Harris, Sally
Magnusson, Val McDermid, Miles Jupp and many others. Sandy Forsyth
will be hosting the Iona Community part of the event on the Friday
afternoon - please take a flyer at the rear door of the church. For
programme and tickets, please visit - https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/wintertales/
EXPLORING PRAYER IN THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION – WEDNESDAYS AT
7.00PM DURING DECEMBER In the dark of winter, Christians traditionally
use prayer and contemplation to open themselves up to the coming of
God in Advent. Join us as we explore a range of Advent prayer practice
that help us to become more aware of God with us. Practices that also
connect us to a community of people, past and present, who have prayed
in these ways. The informal sessions, led by our student minister, Reuben
Addis, will start with lighting an advent candle, a stilling exercise, and then
several different styles of contemplative prayer often drawing on different
senses and on our imagination. It would be helpful if you could book in
advance (numbers limited to fifteen), by mailing Reuben
COLLECTION Most of those who attend worship support our work
through standing orders, but before the first lockdown we also had a plate
collection during the service for visitors and those who preferred that form
of offering. Covid restrictions still prevent us passing a plate during the
service. Instead we are now inviting those who would have put offerings
in the plate during the service to do so at the close of the service. In the
halls entrance and in the vestibule, you will find a bowl or plate marked
‘Plate Collection’. Regular and one-off donations, are still possible online
through: www.give.net/20311853 or by contacting our Freewill Offerings

CROSSREACH PERINATAL SERVICES – NOVEMBER GIVING
Mayfield Salisbury’s ‘local’ charity, continue to offer online support to
families and are pleased to be also welcoming families into the building
at Simpson House in Queen Street for face-to-face counselling which
comes with creche support. They are also offering infant massage
and a new prenatal group for the pregnant mums on their waiting list.
CrossReach PNS would appreciate our help now, more than ever. Instead
of our usual bucket collection, we are asking you to help by giving direct
to CrossReach Perinatal Services in one of the following ways:
· Online giving. Visit the crossreach.org.uk page and click the purple
‘Donate’ button at the top right of the page. This takes you to a Just
Giving page which is for general CrossReach donations but there is a
box in which you can ‘Add a message of support’ and please would you
type in there that the donation is for Perinatal Services (or PNS) which
will ensure funds are routed to PNS. Please note that Just Giving
automatically adds a platform fee but this can be changed to zero if
preferred (with no reduction in the amount that is then routed to PNS).
There is also the opportunity to gift aid your donation.
· Postal giving. CrossReach would be happy to receive any cheques by
post which should be payable to ‘CrossReach’ and sent to Supporter
Development, CrossReach, Charis House, 47 Milton Road East, Edinburgh,
EH15 2SR. If you could send cheques with a covering letter to let
CrossReach know that the donation is for perinatal services, and if you
wish to gift aid then please note that in your letter. In order to gift aid,
CrossReach needs a note of your name and address.
If you have any questions, please contact Ailsa Garland (Committee
co-ordinator) on 07793 197858 or at
