AS A DIVERSE PEOPLE, THE CHURCH GATHERS TO WORSHIP ALMIGHTY GOD

Call to Worship
From Psalm 23

Leader: Come, lie down in green pastures.
All: We trust the Shepherd.
Come, walk beside the still waters
We follow the Shepherd.
Come, do not fear even the darkness.
We are protected by the Shepherd.
Come, let goodness and mercy be with you.
We live in the Shepherd’s care.

Hymn 194   This is the Day

This is the day,
this is the day that the Lord has made,
that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice,
we will rejoice and be glad in it
and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made,
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day,
this is the day that the Lord has made.

This is the day,
this is the day when he rose again,
when he rose again.
We will rejoice,
we will rejoice and be glad in it,
and be glad in it.
This is the day when he rose again,
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day,
this is the day when he rose again.

This is the day,
this is the day when the Spirit came,
when the Spirit came.
We will rejoice,
we will rejoice and be glad in it,
and be glad in it.
This is the day when the Spirit came.
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day,
this is the day when the Spirit came.

Old Testament Reading – Psalm 23      Heather Mole

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.

New Testament Reading - John 10:11-18   Freya Mole

Jesus said: 11 ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’

Hymn  The Lord's My Shepherd

The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want.
He makes me lie in pastures green.
He leads me by the still, still waters,
His goodness restores my soul.

And I will trust in You alone.
And I will trust in You alone,
For Your endless mercy follows me,
Your goodness will lead me home.

He guides my ways in righteousness,
And he anoints my head with oil,
And my cup, it overflows with joy,
I feast on his pure delights.

And though I walk the darkest path,
I will not fear the evil one,
For you are with me, and your rod and staff
Are the comfort I need to know.

Hymn   My God is So Big
Sung three times, with actions!

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There's nothing that he cannot do.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There's nothing that he cannot do.

The rivers are his, the mountains are his,
The stars are his handiwork too.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,
There's nothing that he cannot do.

From Junior Praise (c) 1986,
Compiled by Peter Horrobin and Greg Leavers, arr. Phil Burt
Sung by Walter Thomson

Prayer with Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Closing Responses
Adapted from a prayer by Mary Petrina Boyd

Leader: Loving Shepherd, you know each of our names,
All: You care for us.
When we face darkness and pain,
You walk beside us.
When we hunger for your love,
You feed us at your table.
When we are lonely,
You fill us with your presence.
Our cup overflows with your grace,
May your goodness and mercy follow us
all the days of our lives.

Blessing and Amen

ANNUAL LEAVE  The Pastoral Assistant, Kay McIntosh, from 25 April - 1 May inclusive.

CALLING THOSE WITH AN INTEREST IN DEVELOPING THE CHURCH’S ONLINE AND SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE! We’re delighted to be hosting a Zoom session to explore how we can better express our faith and our church through our website and social media, particularly in these times as we emerge from the pandemic. We would love you to be there. It will be on Wednesday 28 April at 7.30pm and will be led by Dr Pete Phillips. Pete is Research Fellow in Digital Theology at Durham University and Head of Digital Theology at Premier Radio. He advises the Scottish online church, Sanctuary First, and local churches and denominations in England on their digital presence. All very welcome – please contact Sandy on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to be part of it.

OUR E-MAIL PRAYER CHAIN HAS BEGUN! If you or anyone that you know would like prayers to be offered to God for a particular person or situation, there is a group of members waiting to do so. Our Pastoral Assistant, Kay McIntosh, has kindly agreed to be the initial co-ordinator, and all prayer requests should normally be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or handwritten and placed in the prayer box at the church door. An email will go out from Kay once a week on a Monday with the prayer requests set out. If you would like to receive the weekly email and to pray for those situations, please also get in touch with Kay. As Kay is on holiday this week, any prayer requests this week should be sent to the minister at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The prayer request that you send could either be confidential (e.g. ‘please pray for a woman who…’), or it could name the person if you have their permission for that to be so. It could also be for a local or world situation. Praying for others within and beyond Mayfield Salisbury via the prayer chain will be a powerful way to build relationships of care within our church and in the wider community, and to see prayer answered. It would be wonderful to see the prayer chain flourish, so please do engage with it as much as possible.

YOUTH WORSHIP Tonight, 25 April, we will meet on Zoom for a Youth Worship service at 7pm. Please bring some art supplies (anything you like to use. . .colouring pens, paint, collage materials etc) as we gather together with music, prayer and time for reflection! For the Zoom log-in information, please contact Hillary.
