Welcome to this Service of Worship from Mayfield Salisbury Parish Church
The Transfiguration Sunday 6 March 10.45am
‘The one who makes war forgets humanity... He entrusts himself
to the diabolical and perverse logic of arms, which is farthest from
the will of God, and he distances himself from the ordinary people
who want peace.’
Pope Francis, 27 February 2022

Call to Worship
Based on writing from Henri Nouwen
One: We won’t fear the whispers of doubt and temptation
All : God will lead us into peace and stillness
One: We won’t fear the desert place
All: God will turn loneliness to stillness and solitude
One: We won’t fear being inadequate
All : We set this morning aside simply to know that we are loved.
Hymn 259 Beauty for Brokenness
Verses 1 and 3 - 5 (t. God of the Poor)
Beauty for brokenness,
hope for despair,
Lord, in the suffering
this is our prayer.
Bread for the children,
justice, joy, peace,
sunrise to sunset
your kingdom increase.
God of the poor,
friend of the weak,
give us compassion, we pray,
melt our cold hearts,
let tears fall like rain.
Come, change our love
from a spark to a flame.
Refuge from cruel wars,
havens from fear,
cities for sanctuary,
freedoms to share.
Peace to the killing fields,
scorched earth to green,
Christ for the bitterness,
his cross for the pain.
Rest for the ravaged earth,
oceans and streams,
plundered and poisoned,
our future, our dreams.
Lord, end our madness,
carelessness, greed;
make us content with
the things that we need.
Lighten our darkness,
breathe on this flame,
until your justice
burns brightly again;
until the nations
learn of your ways,
seek your salvation
and bring you their praise.
Prayer of Approach, Confession & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn 189 Be still, for the presence of the Lord
(t. Be Still)
Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One, is here;
come bow before him now
with reverence and fear:
in him no sin is found ñ
we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One, is here.
Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around;
he burns with holy fire,
with splendour he is crowned:
how awesome is the sight ñ
our radiant king of light!
Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around.
Be still, for the power of the Lord
is moving in this place;
he comes to cleanse and heal,
to minister his grace:
no work too hard for him -
in faith receive from him.
Be still, for the power of the Lord
is moving in this place.
First Reading 1 Kings 8:22 - 23, 41 - 43
Read by Patricia McDonald
Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication
22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all
the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23 He said, ‘O
Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth
beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk
before you with all their heart…
41 ‘Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from
a distant land because of your name 42 —for they shall hear of your great
name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—when a foreigner
comes and prays towards this house, 43 then hear in heaven your dwelling-
place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the
peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people
Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this
house that I have built.
Anthem - Turn thy face from our sins
Words: Psalm 51: 9 – 11
Music: Thomas Attwood (1765 – 1838)
Turn Thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds.
Make me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence,
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Second Reading St Luke 9:28 - 36
Read by Patricia McDonald
The Transfiguration
28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and
John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he
was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became
dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to
him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which
he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but
since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who
stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus,
‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for
you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’—not knowing what he said. 34
While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they
were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a
voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’
36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent
and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.
Hymn ’Tis good, Lord, to be here
(t. Carlisle)
’Tis good, Lord, to be here,
Thy glory fills the night;
Thy face and garments, like the sun,
Shine with unborrowed light.
’Tis good, Lord, to be here,
Thy beauty to behold
Where Moses and Elijah stand,
Thy messengers of old.
Fulfiller of the past,
Promise of things to be,
We hail Thy body glorified
And our redemption see.
Before we taste of death,
We see Thy kingdom come;
We fain would hold the vision bright
And make this hill our home.
’Tis good, Lord, to be here.
Yet we may not remain;
But since Thou bidst us leave the mount,
Come with us to the plain.
Sermon
From the Mountaintop into the Valley
Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth
Hymn 456 Christ is the world's true light
(t. Nun Danket)
Christ is the world's true light,
its captain of salvation,
the daystar clear and bright
of every race and nation;
new life, new hope awakes,
where people own his sway:
from bondage freedom breaks,
and night is turned to day.
In Christ all races meet,
their ancient feuds forgetting,
the whole round world complete,
from sunrise to its setting:
when Christ is throned as Lord,
we shall forsake our fear,
to ploughshare beat the sword,
to pruning-hook the spear.
One Lord, in one great name
unite us all who own you;
cast out our pride and shame
that hinder to enthrone you;
the world has waited long,
has travailed long in pain:
come, heal its ancient wrong,
come, Prince of Peace, and reign.
Prayer for Others
Prayer for Ukraine
One: The psalmist writes:
‘I call on the Lord in my distress,
and he answers me.’
Lord, we call to you in our distress.
All: We trust you to answer us.
ONE: We lift up the people of Ukraine before you.
We pray to you for peace.
Bring an end to violence, bring comfort and respite to the injured,
the bereaved and the refugees.
Lord, we call to you in our distress.
All: We trust you to answer us.
One: We pray for warmongers and world leaders,
guide their actions and responses to this crisis,
may hope and grace and peace triumph now over
fear and hate and war.
Lord, we call to you in our distress.
All: We trust you to answer us.
One: We pray for the church in Ukraine and Russia,
give them courage to speak truth, justice and love
And strength to use their hands for healing,
Lord, we call to you in our distress.
All: We trust you to answer us.
One: In a moment of silence,
we lift our fears, our sorrows and our hopes to you.
We pray, Lord, that you might hush the noise of the men of strife
That they might lay down their weapons and stop the killing
God of peace, God of love,
have mercy on our world,
have mercy on Ukraine.
Lord, we call to you in our distress.
All: We trust you to answer us. Amen.
Hymn 459 Crown him with many crowns
(t. Diademata)
Crown him with many crowns,
the Lamb upon his throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns
all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless King
through all eternity.
Crown him the Lord of life,
who triumphed o'er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife
for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing
who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.
Crown him the Lord of love;
behold his hands and side,
rich wounds yet visible above,
in beauty glorified.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
for thou hast died for me:
thy praise shall never, never fail
throughout eternity.
Closing Responses
From Ephesians 6
One: As we start our Lenten journey teach us to follow you;
All : To put on the belt of truth; even when it’s easier to compromise.
One: In desert times when we feel weak.
All: We will put on the breastplate of righteousness.
One: And as we go into the week ahead
All : We fit our feet with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace

The National Anthem of Ukraine
THIS MORNING’S CHAMBER GROUP MUSIC The introit is a well-known
spiritual of the Deep South, full of longing for a better place. It was
arranged by Brian Trant for his ‘Grail Passion’ of 1952. The anthem is by
Thomas Attwood, organist of St Paul’s Catherdral, who was a pupil of
Mozart and a friend of Mendelssohn. Each part of the melody is first stated
by a soprano solo before being repeated in harmony by the choir. Note
the insistent setting of the word ‘renew’.

UKRAINE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS AND CHRISTIAN AID’S RESPONSE
We have all been appalled by recent events unfolding in Ukraine. As
conflict intensifies, more than a million people have fled their homes.
Leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones, they need shelter, food
and water.
Christian Aid is working with partner organisations in the ACT Alliance (a
global faith-based coalition), to offer assistance to Ukraine refugees fleeing
deadly violence. So far, one of their ACT partners has already distributed
28 tonnes of food supplies and other lifesaving essentials to people on the
Ukrainian borders. With your help, they can do much, much more.
Christian Aid is a member of the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee),
which brings together leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and
efficiently in response to large-scale disasters. The UK government has
promised to match donations to the DEC’s Ukraine Appeal up to £20
million. You can reach them at:

LENTEN SWISHING What is this? Swishing is when you change unwanted
goods for someone else’s. During Lent, the Eco Group would like to
experiment with this for clothes and accessories. Remember that sale
bargain you picked up and will never wear or that Christmas present that is
far too small. Well. if you have such an item, bring it along on Sunday
mornings during Lent and see if there is anything you might exchange it
for. All goods must be scarcely worn and clean and in good condition. If
there is something that catches your eye – please help yourself. No cost is
involved and all leftovers will be delivered to Bethany after Easter. So in one
fell swoop, you get rid of that unwanted item, save a trip to the charity
shop, reduce clothes manufacture and help with re-cycling and reducing
landfill. What could be better?
