The Glorious New Creation
17 For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC Benjamin Britten appointed Aston as the
founding conductor of The Aldeburgh Singers. The poignant remembrance
anthem “So they gave their bodies” (1976) was commissioned by the Royal
School of Church Music for one of its Service Books. The text is taken from
Pericles’ famous Funeral Oration of 431 BC, as appears in Thucydides’
History of the Peloponnesian War. Over a rocking organ accompaniment, it
explores dissonant but attractive harmonies. It shows great sympathy with
the text, with a later repetition of the first phrase. John Ireland’s powerful
and much-loved Remembrance anthem “Greater Love” is an extensive
setting of various Biblical texts. It has beautifully melodic passages for
single voices interspersed with choral passages with dynamic and tempo
variations, at one time forceful and resolute and at others quiet and
contemplative.

NEWS AND INTIMATIONS
1. OPEN TO ALL Coffee and tea will be served in the McDonald Hall at
the close of the Sunday morning services. Everyone is most welcome.
2. GRAPEVINE DEADLINE This Friday Please note the deadline for the
next magazine (December, January) is this Friday, 18 November at 6.00pm
one week earlier than usual.
3. CROSSREACH PERINATAL SERVICES Many thanks for all the support
for our collection for CrossReach perinatal services last Sunday. If you have
brought an envelope this week then please could you put it in the
collection plate at the main entrance to the church or pass to one of the
Committee members.
Or you can give online by visiting the crossreach.org.uk page and clicking
the purple “Donate” button at the top right of the page. This takes you to
a Just Giving page which is for general CrossReach donations but there is a
box in which you can “Add a message of support” and please would you
type in there that the donation is for Perinatal Services (or PNS) which will
ensure funds are routed to PNS. Please note that Just Giving automatically
adds a platform fee but this can be changed to zero if preferred (with no
reduction in the amount that is then routed to PNS). There is also the
opportunity to gift aid your donation.
4. YOUTH GROUP Sunday 13 November: ALL AGES have been invited
to our escape room outing at LockEdinburgh at Summerhall from 6:00-
7:00pm (arriving at Summerhall for 5:50pm). Consent forms must be
completed. Sign-ups have now closed due to limited spaces.
Sunday 20 November: ALL AGES are invited to our annual Thanksgiving
Dinner in the Bill McDonald Hall from 6:15-8:00pm. We will also be
collecting donations for the food bank that evening. If you plan on
attending, please let Hillary know by the end of the day on 13 November,
and share any dietary requirements.
5. BOOKS We've all got too much stuff! A house should have no more
than 30 books. Decluttering is good for the soul. Taking these quotations
from last Sunday's sermon to heart, the ecogroup has planned a Paperback
Exchange. So, please leave paperbacks, in good condition and with which
you have finished, in the Entrance Hall (under the coat pegs) and come
along on November 20th to find replacements or, better still, a few
Christmas presents.
6. THURSDAY CLUB continues on Thursday at 2.00pm. This week, Kozo
Hoshine and John Ferguson will give a talk titled ‘Our Holiday in Italy’.
The talk will be followed by tea and fellowship. All are very welcome!
7. POPPIES FOR REMEMBRANCE Poppy Scotland lapel poppies with tins
for donations are available today.
8. OUR SHORTER AFTERNOON SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE will be on
Tuesday 15 NOVEMBER at 2.30 pm and will be led by Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth.
This Service is held in the Bill McDonald Hall via West Mayfield level access.
Proceedings usually finish at 3.45pm at the latest.
Everyone always made most welcome. You might find this less-formal
worship style a good opportunity to renew friendships after the isolation in
recent times and as winter approaches. If you haven’t joined us before
why not come this time and if you would like to bring someone with you
for company or assistance, please do ! To make things comfortable for all
we remain seated around our tables for 4 – 6 people for the Service and
enjoy light refreshments together afterwards. If you would appreciate
further information please speak with Kay McIntosh or your Pastoral Visitor

advance if you intend to be present to enable us to plan a safe seating

10. GIFT SERVICES - SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2022 The congregation
donates to six major recipients and an idea of the needs of another two
more are listed below.
CrossReach - Sunflower Garden Project The CrossReach unit based in
Simpson House helps many children whose parents are struggling to
overcome addictions. They hope to have gifts for around 20 children and in
addition welcome art materials for use in their sessions with the children.
Acceptable gifts include kinetic sand (Argos, The Entertainer) and lego.
While individual children are not named by the unit, they have told me that
there are 3 x 13 year olds and 1 x 16.
Women's Aid The request from Women's Aid is again for supermarket
vouchers which enables their service users to buy the gifts their children
would most appreciate. Morrison's and Sainsbury's are most useful to them.

13. ‘LIVING THE QUESTIONS’ – NEW COURSE TO EXPLORE CHRISTIAN FAITH
A new course is about to start to explore Christian faith, led by the three
ministers at Mayfield Salisbury, Priestfield and Craigmillar Park and hosted
by each of the churches. It is based on the ‘Living the Questions’ material,
which is produced by some well-known progressive theologians from both
sides of the Atlantic, such as Brian MacLaren and John Bell. The material
encourages growing in faith by discussion of big questions relating to faith
and the world, rather than the teaching of doctrine. The course will run for
six Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm to 8.30pm, starting on 9 November
and ending on 14 December. You would be very welcome! To register or to

14. MUSICAL CONCERT FOR ADVENT ON 11 DECEMBER Our choir and
Chamber Group will present an evening of Advent and Christmas music on
11 December. We would be delighted if we were joined by other singers
from Mayfield Salisbury and indeed from Priestfield and Craigmillar Park, to
make an extra special joint musical event. While you would not need to be
brilliant sight readers, and there will be a chance to learn the music, a
degree of musical literacy would be required. A number of singers have
volunteered, mostly ladies, so it would be good if some singing men joined us.
Rehearsals will on Thursday evenings starting on 17 November. If you
would like to take part or to ask any questions about it, please let Walter
know as soon as possible so he can know the numbers of copies of music

17. MEDICINE BLISTER PACKS RECYCLING The Eco group have long been
pursuing the issue of recycling the blister packs which contain medication -
anything from prescribed medication to Paracetamol. Some previous
information retaking blister packs to Superdrug turned out to be inaccurate
(it's only Superdrug Pharmacies which do this.) We now have a link which
can send blister packs to Haddington for forwarding to a firm which
recycles. Blister packs can be collected in a box (labelled) in the Entrance Hall.
