AS A DIVERSE PEOPLE, THE CHURCH GATHERS
TO WORSHIP ALMIGHTY GOD

Welcome & Church News
Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth

Call to Worship
Adapted from Psalms 95 and 118

One: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord
All: Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation

One: Let us come before him with thanksgiving
All: and praise him with music and song.

One: This is the day that the Lord has made!
All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Let us worship God!

Hymn 194   This is the Day

Reading – Eilidh Robertson and Emily Mole
Psalm 100 (Common English Bible) A psalm of thanks.

Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Serve the Lord with celebration!
Come before him with shouts of joy!
3 Know that the Lord is God—
he made us; we belong to him.
We are his people,
the sheep of his own pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanks;
enter his courtyards with praise!
Thank him! Bless his name!
5 Because the Lord is good,
his loyal love lasts forever;
his faithfulness lasts generation after generation.

Reading – Eilidh Robertson & Emily Mole
Matthew 3:13-17 (Common English Bible)
Baptism of Jesus

13 At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River so that John
would baptize him. 14 John tried to stop him and said, “I need to be
baptized by you, yet you come to me?”

15 Jesus answered, “Allow me to be baptized now. This is necessary to
fulfill all righteousness.”

So John agreed to baptize Jesus. 16 When Jesus was baptized, he
immediately came up out of the water. Heaven was opened to him, and he
saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting on him. 17 A
voice from heaven said, “This is my Son whom I dearly love; I find
happiness in him.”

Closing Prayer & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your
will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive
us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of
trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are
yours now and for ever. Amen.

Song These are the days of Elijah

These are the days of Elijah
Declaring the word of the Lord
And these are the days of Your servant Moses
Righteousness being restored
And though these are days of great trial
Of famine and darkness and sword
Still, we are the voice in the desert crying
"Prepare ye the way of the Lord!"

Chorus: Behold, He comes riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet call
Lift your voice, the year of jubilee
And out of Zion's hill, salvation comes

And these are the days of Ezekiel
The dry bones becoming as flesh
And these are the days of Your servant David
Rebuilding a temple of praise
Oh, these are the days of the harvest
For the fields are as white in Your world
And we are the labourers in Your vineyard
Declaring the word of the Lord!

Repeat Chorus twice

Blessing & The Grace

One: The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make his face to shine upon you
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you
And give you peace.

All: May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God, and the fellowship of the
Holy Spirit be with you all, now and forever. Amen.

Amen

NEWS AND INTIMATIONS

1. OPEN TO ALL Coffee and tea will be served in the McDonald Hall at
the close of the Sunday morning services. Everyone is most welcome.

2. PAPERBACK EXCHANGE Do have a look at the
paperbacks in the Entrance Hall and take one or two to read yourself or,
perhaps, as Christmas presents. Thanks to all who contributed.

3. MUSICAL CONCERT FOR ADVENT ON 11 DECEMBER Our choir and
Chamber Group will present an evening of Advent and Christmas music on
11 December. We would be delighted if we were joined by other singers
from Mayfield Salisbury and indeed from Priestfield and Craigmillar Park, to
make an extra special joint musical event. While you would not need to be
brilliant sight readers, and there will be a chance to learn the music, a
degree of musical literacy would be required. A number of singers have
volunteered, mostly ladies, so it would be good if some singing men joined us.

Rehearsals will on Thursday evenings. If you would like to take part or to
ask any questions about it, please let Walter know as soon as possible so
he can know the numbers of copies of music required. Walter Thomson,
Choirmaster. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and 07517 050140

7. GIFT SERVICES - SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2022 The final two recipients
of gifts from our annual Gift Services are described below.

STOPOVER Hostel The hostel has 16 beds for teens who are homeless.
There are usually more boys than girls although in recent years the
numbers have equalised a little. Welcome donations are toiletries, new tee-
shirts and fleeces/hoodies, sports socks, graphic novels (Waterstone's at
Cameron Toll have a good selection), age-appropriate fiction and slipper
socks. We usually try to include a football.

Gilmerton Early Years This facility caters for infants 0-5 years approx. Soft
toys (with tag attached, please), bath toys, colouring books and pencils,
floor jigsaws, shape sorting toys and dolls in boxes come to mind. Duplo
and play-dough are also good. Should you have, or have received, any new
and unused baby or toddler clothing which is surplus to your requirements,
it would find a welcome, too.

Gift tags and wrapping paper are useful donations for several of our
recipients. With thanks but nearly new items and alcohol cannot be placed."

8. ‘LIVING THE QUESTIONS’ – NEW COURSE TO EXPLORE CHRISTIAN
FAITH A new course is about to start to explore Christian faith, led by the
three ministers at Mayfield Salisbury, Priestfield and Craigmillar Park and
hosted by each of the churches. It is based on the ‘Living the Questions’
material, which is produced by some well-known progressive theologians
from both sides of the Atlantic, such as Brian MacLaren and John Bell. The
material encourages growing in faith by discussion of big questions
relating to faith and the world, rather than the teaching of doctrine. The
course will run for six Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm to 8.30pm,
starting on 9 November and ending on 14 December. You would be very
welcome! To register or to find out more, speak to one of the three
ministers or email them. For Mayfield Salisbury –

12. A CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA Why not give yourself or someone else a
subscription to Life and Work, for a year of news, features and opinions
within the church and beyond. A special offer of 12 issues for the price of
10 is currently available, delivered directly to your address. To subscribe,
phone 4607487 or visit www.lifeandwork.org, quoting the promotion code XMAS22

13. MEDICINE BLISTER PACKS RECYCLING The Eco group have long been
pursuing the issue of recycling the blister packs which contain medication -
anything from prescribed medication to Paracetamol. Some previous
information retaking blister packs to Superdrug turned out to be
inaccurate (it's only Superdrug Pharmacies which do this.) We now have a
link which can send blister packs to Haddington for forwarding to a firm
which recycles. Blister packs can be collected in a box (labelled) in the
Entrance Hall.

14. SERVICE TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES In the evening of Sunday 27
November, at the start of Advent, there will be a service to remember
loved ones who have passed away who we might be missing at this time of
year. The service will be at Priestfield at 7pm

15. WARM HUBS  To provide places each day of warmth and welcome
over the winter for members of the churches and their friends, six local
churches, including Church of Scotland, Roman Catholic, Baptist and Jewish
congregations, are intending to work together to provide such a space in
their respective places of worship, hopefully starting soon. Mayfield
Salisbury may well do so on a Friday afternoon, say between 1pm and 4pm.
If we are to do so, we would need two volunteers to give their time on
every such afternoon, to welcome folk and be available if there are any
issues. Might you be willing to do so? Please do consider and let the
minister know – thank you.

16. GIVING – QR CODE Our Quick Response code is a handy way of
using your smart ‘phone or tablet’s QR app to link you to our Giving Page.
Once you have joined the Giving Page safeguards are still operative.
PLATES: Those who would have wished to use it may make use of the
offering plates situated in the vestibule and halls entrance, at the close of
the service. Regular and one-off donations are possible online at
www.give.net/20311853 (scan the QR code) or please contact our Freewill
