is one of your first visits, you are very welcome as part of
this community and today’s service of worship. God bless
you. If you would like to keep in touch, please complete

Notes on the Music, by Philip Sawyer Alan Hovhannes was an Amercian
composer of Armenian and Scottish descent. I am delighted to be joined
this morning by the young Ukrainian trumpeter Mariia Vodovozova. I was
her guardian when she was a pupil at the Purcell School in London; she is
now a student of music in Timisoara, Romania.

9. STUDENT WELCOME: ‘CURRY AND CONVERSATION’ EVENING AT
MAYFIELD SALISBURY CHURCH ON WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER. Mayfield
Salisbury Church has many links with the University of Edinburgh, not least
via our minister Sandy Forsyth’s on-going responsibilities at the School of
Divinity at New College. Postgraduate Students arriving in Edinburgh to
study at the School of Divinity from overseas often have few if any contacts
with locals in general and with places of worship specifically. Last year
Mayfield Salisbury Church offered these students (whatever their faith) a
warm Scottish welcome by hosting a “Curry and Conversation’ welcome
event which was well attended and much appreciated by the students.
Several took up the opportunity to link with a host family for continued
friendship and support.

This year we will repeat the welcome event with a Curry and Conversation
evening on Wednesday 14 September from 6.30 to 8.30 pm in the Bill
McDonald Hall.

We will also facilitate connecting students, should they so wish, to
‘welcome hosts’ of individuals or families from the congregation. Examples
of hosting activities might include inviting them for a meal, showing them
the local sights and joining them at church on a Sunday morning

If you would like to (1) attend the welcome event and/or (2) become a
‘welcome host’, please contact Alastair MacGilchrist
(This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 0793 173 0805 or in person), preferably by
Monday 22 August.

10. STAMP APPEAL We are still collecting stamps! This year, the proceeds
from selling them will be used to support pastors in Lebanon. They are
employed by the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL),
which is a partner of the Church of Scotland. The economic crisis in the
country has struck hard and the Synod is struggling to pay salaries. Pastors
are key people supporting the spiritual and institutional life and ministry of
the Synod. Despite the hardships experienced, they are reaching out to the
needy in their congregations in a sacrificial way, and have even set up a
scheme where they give half of their salary to a relief programme for the
neediest families. The desperate situation has prompted the Synod to ask
its partners around the world for support. This year the Stamp Project aims
to raise enough funds to pay a pastor a full year's salary. You can be part of
this simply by passing on your used stamps.

Look out for our red stamp-collecting box on the table in the Halls
entrance. If you have a large collection, or stamps which you believe to be
valuable, please let me know and I’ll be happy to pick them up from you in
person. Contact Kate O’Brien This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. tel. 0131 667
4362. Thank you!

11. THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL OF THE SACRED ARTS IN THE FRINGE
offers a wide range of events including worship, visual art, dance, music,
drama and poetry. Tickets available via the Fringe
https://tickets.edfringe.com You can pick up a leaflet in the vestibule or
halls entrance.

12. COFFEE AND BLETHERS Coffee and Blethers has resumed and will run
over the Summer on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of July, August and
September from 2.00pm to 3.30pm.

13. UKRAINE It is difficult to remind ourselves as we enjoy time outside
(albeit recently under grey skies) in the eastern part of Ukraine there is no
peace as shells rain down indiscriminately on people, buildings and fields.
The current avenues by which help can be given to support Ukraine, from
hosting a refugee family to prayer, can be found on our website:
www.mayfieldsalisbury.org/index.php/gallery/ukraine Please also
remember those in other parts of the world who face conflict and suffering.
