Preparatory Silence for Worship
Introit: Haste Thee, O God
Words; Psalm 70: 1 to 4
Music: Adrian Batten (1591 to 1637)
Haste Thee, O God to deliver me, make haste to help me. Let them be
ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul. Let them for their
reward be soon brought to shame, that cry over me: "There, there,
there." But let all those who seek thee be joyful and glad in thee, and let
all such as delight in thy salvation say always: "The Lord be praised!" Amen.
Call to Worship
From Isaiah 43:2
Leader: When we pass through danger,
All: God is there with us.
Leader: When we suffer and feel hopeless,
All: God is there with us.
Leader: When we are joyful and happy,
All: God is there with us.
Leader: Whether we feel delighted or defeated today,
All: God is here with us.
Leader; Come, let us worship together with Emmanuel,
All: God with us, always
Hymn 482 Come Let Us to the Lord our God
(t. Kilmarnock)
Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn 550 As the Deer Pants for the Water
Reading Isaiah 56:1 - 5
Read by Angus McIntyre (OT p. 696)
The Covenant Extended to All Who Obey 56 Thus says the LORD:
Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed. 2 Happy is the mortal who does this,
the one who holds it fast, who keeps the sabbath, not profaning it,
and refrains from doing any evil. 3 Do not let the foreigner joined to the
LORD say, ‘The LORD will surely separate me from his people’; and do
not let the eunuch say, ‘I am just a dry tree.’ 4 For thus says the LORD:
To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths, who choose the things that
please me and hold fast my covenant, 5 I will give, in my house and
within my walls, a monument and a name better than sons and
daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.
Anthem O Saviour of the World
Words: Collect for visitation of the sick
Music: John Goss (1800 to 1880)
O Saviour of the World,
who by thy cross and precious
blood hast redeemed us.
Save us and help us,
we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.
Amen
Reading John 18:28, 33 - 38
Read by Angus McIntyre (NT p. 109)
Jesus before Pilate 28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s
headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter
the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat
the Passover….
33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and
asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ 34 Jesus answered, ‘Do you
ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?’ 35 Pilate replied,
‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed
you over to me. What have you done?’ 36 Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom
is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers
would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But
as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ 37 Pilate asked him, ‘So you are
a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born,
and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who
belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’ 38 Pilate asked him, ‘What is truth?’
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, ‘I
find no case against him.’
Reader: For the Word of God revealed through Scripture.

Closing Response
From St Brigid of Gael, 6th Century
Leader: Through a mighty strength, God's power to guide me,
All: God's might to uphold me,
Leader: God's eyes to watch over me,
All: God's ear to hear me,
Leader: God's word to give me speech,
All: God's hand to guard me,
Leader: God's shield to shelter me,
All: God's way to lie before me.

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
Adrian Batten was one of several English church music composers, lead
notably by Orlando Gibbons, in the period between the Reformation and
the Civil War. He was a “vicar choral” otherwise a lay clerk at
Westminster Cathedral. In today’s introit each section of text is
introduced with hymn like chordal sections before breaking into
polyphony for closing phrases, all leading to a stately “Amen.”
John Goss, (composer of “Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven”) was
organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. The anthem is a fine example of Victorian
sacred choral music with an elegant melodic line and much repeated
text. It twice reaches climaxes to emphasise the words “who by thy
Cross and precious Blood.”

4. VOLUNTEER SOUGHT Hugh Pollock is standing down as clerk to
the Hunter Bequest and the Agnes Crispin Trust. I understand the roles
are not onerous and involve periodic short meetings to support the
trustees in the management of the funds in line with their aims and the
preparation and management of the accounts. Hugh has undertaken
these tasks for many years and we very much appreciate his
involvements. However, with his departure we need someone willing to
take on these roles. If you think you can help please get in touch with
Hugh to discuss in more detail what is involved. Many thanks.
