Call to Worship
Leader: Look, your king comes to you;
All: Hosanna in the highest!
Leader: He is just and loving, he brings peace.
All: Hosanna in the highest!
Leader: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hymn 367 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna
(t. Ellacombe)
Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
The Collect Said by all
True and humble king,
hailed by the crowd as Messiah:
grant us the faith to know you and love you,
that we may be found beside you
on the way of the cross,
which is the path of glory.
Hymn Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
(t. Sing Hosanna)
Reading Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29

A Song of Victory
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever!
2 Let Israel say,
‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’…
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches,
up to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.
29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

Reading Matthew 21:1-11
Read by Hugh Pollock (NT p. 23)
Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
21 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at
the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, ‘Go into the
village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a
colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything
to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them
immediately.’ 4 This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the
prophet, saying,
5 ‘Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7 they brought
the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.
8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut
branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that
went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,
‘Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!’
10 When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who
is this?’ 11 The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from
Nazareth in Galilee.’’

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
Palestrina was the leading composer of the Roman School of musical
composition of the Italian Renaissance. The melodic basis for the Mass was
the tune of the hymn for Matins and Apostles which gives it its name . The
serene Benedictus is set for three upper voices, the bass being added in
the more lively “Hosanna.”
David Morgan lives and works in Norfolk. The acerbic style of this anthem
reflect the wok of his teacher William Matthias. Declaimed fanfares of
“hosannas” throughout the piece are contrasted with darker settings of the
inner text.

NEWS AND INTIMATIONS
0 - PROPOSED NAME FOR THE NEW CONGREGATION
Dear friends,
As you may have heard last Sunday, the Union Steering Group (USG: the
3 Ministers and Session Clerks of Craigmillar Park, Mayfield Salisbury
and Priestfield churches) are proposing 4 names for your consideration
for the name of the new congregation under the union.
We are inviting you to signal which one you prefer in an indicative vote.
The vote will take place this Sunday 2 April – Palm Sunday – in all 3
congregations. The paper votes will be available at the services. Boxes
for your completed voting form will be available.
We are very grateful for the wide range of suggestions for the possible
name of the new congregation. Over 50 were put forward. The name
has to be approved by Presbytery and must also meet certain criteria
such as providing a geographical indication and avoiding confusion or
overlap with other local churches. It also has to be agreed by the
Charity Regulator (OSCR).
Saints names were suggested, as were those which combined elements
of the present names of the three congregations. Of the names
proposed those variations with “Newington” in them gained by far the
largest support. Some reference to “South” also garnered some
backing.
With all of this in mind we selected 4 possible names for consideration.
Each of the names below will fit into the format “Edinburgh: “Name”
Church of Scotland”.
The names are:
a- Newington Trinity
b- Parkfield
c- St. Andrew’s Newington
d- South Newington
If you are unable to attend a service in person and wish to indicate a
preference please contact me –
know your preference. I will need to have received your preference by
5pm on Sunday 2 April. If you know of anyone not on email who may
wish to vote for their preference please leave a message on my mobile
07773 587579.
The USG will then review the level of support across the congregations
and will let you know which name we decide on to present to Presbytery
for consideration.

there is plenty of chocolate for Easter treats as well as coffee, tea and
biscuits. We also have a good supply of Kilombero Rice from Malawi. Thank
you for your support.
10. VOLUNTEER SOUGHT Hugh Pollock is standing down as clerk to the
Hunter Bequest and the Agnes Crispin Trust. I understand the roles are not
onerous and involve periodic short meetings to support the trustees in the
management of the funds in line with their aims and the preparation and
management of the accounts. Hugh has undertaken these tasks for many
years and we very much appreciate his involvements. However, with his
departure we need someone willing to take on these roles. If you think
you can help please get in touch with Hugh to discuss in more detail what
is involved. As far as I am aware we are still to have any offer of help.
Many thanks.
