Introit: Come ye faithful
Words: St John Damascene translated J M Neale
Music: R S Thatcher (1888 – 1957)

Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness;
God hath brought forth Israel into joy from sadness;
’Tis the spring of souls today; Christ has burst His prison,
And from three days’ sleep in death as a sun hath risen;

Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour,
With the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render;
Comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection
Welcomes in unwearied strains Jesus’ resurrection.

Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb’s dark portal,
Nor the watchers, nor the seal hold Thee as a mortal;
But today amidst the twelve Thou didst stand, bestowing
That Thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. Alleluia

Hymn 410 Jesus Christ is Risen Today
(t. Easter Hymn)

Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Reading John 20:1 - 18 Read by Anne Robertson (NT p. 111)

The Resurrection of Jesus 20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was
still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had
been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and
the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have
taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid
him.’ 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the
tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter
and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent down to look in and saw the linen
wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came,
following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying
there, 7 and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen
wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who
reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet
they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10
Then the disciples returned to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the
tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12 and she saw
two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at
the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, ‘Woman, why are
you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do
not know where they have laid him.’ 14 When she had said this, she turned
round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was
Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are
you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if
you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take
him away.’ 16 Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in
Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, ‘Do not
hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to
my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your
Father, to my God and your God.’’ 18 Mary Magdalene went and
announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that
he had said these things to her.

Anthem The strife is o’er
Words: 18th Century anon, translated by Francis Pott
Music: Henry Ley (1887-1962) from a 16th c. melody by
Melchior Vulpius - edited by Lionel Dakers

The strife is o’er the battle done; now is the victor’s triumph won;
O let the song of praise be sung, Hallelujah

Death’s mightiest powers have done their worst, and Jesus has
his foes dispersed: let shouts of praise and joy outburst. Hallelujah.

On the third morn He rose again;, Glorious in majesty to reign;
O let us swell the joyful strain Hallelujah

Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee from death’s dead
sting thy servants free, that we may live to sing with thee Hallelujah
Amen

Reading Isaiah 25: 1, 4 - 9
Read by Anne Robertson (OT p. 662)

Praise for Deliverance from Oppression 25 O LORD, you are my God; I
will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have done wonderful things,
plans formed of old, faithful and sure… 4 For you have been a refuge to the
poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm
and a shade from the heat. When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter
rainstorm, 5 the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place, you subdued the
heat with the shade of clouds; the song of the ruthless was stilled. 6 On this
mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a
feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-
matured wines strained clear. 7 And he will destroy on this mountain the
shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all
nations; 8 he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe
away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take
away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9 It will be said on that
day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his
salvation.

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
The choir are delighted to be joined by singers from Priestfield and
Craigmillar Park. Both of today’s items of choir music are to texts found in
our hymn book. Reginald Thatcher was Principal of the Royal Academy of
Music from 1949 to 1955. His vigorous Easter anthem ‘Come, ye faithful’ is
largely in unison with a verse for the ladies underpinned with ‘alleluias’
from the men, and then a verse for men decorated by ‘alleluias’ from the
ladies. ‘The strife is o’er’ is a stately and triumphant hymn to a tune by
Melchior Vulpius (1570 – 1615) arranged by Henry Ley to include sections
in unison which break into harmony, and with descant added at relevant
moments.

7. VOLUNTEER SOUGHT Hugh Pollock is standing down as clerk to the
Hunter Bequest and the Agnes Crispin Trust. I understand the roles are not
onerous and involve periodic short meetings to support the trustees in the
management of the funds in line with their aims and the preparation and
management of the accounts. Hugh has undertaken these tasks for many
years and we very much appreciate his involvements. However, with his
departure we need someone willing to take on these roles. If you think
you can help please get in touch with Hugh to discuss in more detail what
is involved. As far as I am aware we are still to have any offer of help.
Many thanks.
